Basic Needling Techniques (Nei Jing)

TONIFY – when patients breath is empty insert quickly, rotate slowly (emphasize counter-clockwise), withdraw slowly & close hole.

CLEAR - when patients breath is full insert slowly, rotate quickly (emphasize clockwise), withdraw quickly & leave hole uncovered.

Special Points Legend

Yuan Source These influence the original (source) Qi between the Kidneys by aiding the San Jiao function of source Qi movement.

Xi Cleft Qi & Blood gather & plunge deeply, treat acute conditions & pain. On Yin meridians they treat disorders of Blood.

Alarm Mu This is where the Qi of the Zang fu directly below gathers, used for diagnosis & treatment of the corresponding Zang Fu.

Command These are considered to be the most useful & important points of all. They treat any problem of the large area indicated.

Connect These points are where one meridian connects to another. This allows treatment of related meridian or Zang Fu.

Ghost These points treat what would now be referred to as psychological disorders. It was believed these people saw ‘ghosts’.

Lower He These help regulate their corresponding Fu organs (moving & transporting water, waste, & nutrients).

Hui influential These are very influential points for treatment of the Zang, Fu, Qi, Blood, sinews, vessels, bones, & marrow.

Confluence This is where a main meridian may be used for the treatment of the corresponding extraordinary meridian.

9 Needle These treat collapse of Yang (loss of consciousness, extreme coldness, purple/blue lips, etc.)

Shu These lie along the Bladder meridian, they have the function of transporting treatment to the related Zang Fu.
