foods that heal

You are what you eat, so eat well. A stupendous insight of civilizations past has now been confirmed by today's investigative, nutritional sciences. They have shown that what was once called 'The Doctrine of Signatures' was astoundingly correct. It now contends that every whole food has a pattern that resembles a body organ or physiological function and that this pattern acts as a signal or sign as to the benefit the food provides the eater. Here is just a short list of examples of Whole Food Signatures.

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye…and science shows that carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart is red and has four chambers. All of the research shows tomatoes are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows that grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds are on the nut just like the neo-cortex. We now know that walnuts help develop over 3 dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet the body pulls it from the bones, making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

Eggplant, Avocadoes and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female – they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats 1 avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? .... It takes exactly 9 months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).

Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the motility of male sperm and increase the numbers of sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.

Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries.

Grapefruits, Oranges, and other citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

Onions look like body cells. Today's research shows that onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes.

Some other thoughts TCM should promote to our clients;

It seems to ring true to our colours as TCM practitioners to be promoting a healthy fertile world. I think most of us counsel on diet (?), at least the simple energetics that should be followed according to our pattern differentiation, i.e. don't eat too much spicy food if you there is heat presenting, or, do not consume too much raw or cold foods if there is Spleen Qi vacuity. Also, I am sure many practitioners out there have done advanced courses in nutrition of varying styles and take this into consideration when giving advice to their patients. But, are we missing the boat when it comes to ACTUALLY promoting healthier patients? Are we just treating the branch when we tell people to eat better?

I believe it is our responsibility to always be observing and treating the root of any condition. As far as a healthy diet is concerned, we should be looking at this at a deeper level and wholistically. It is said that the true master teaches his community how to be well. This is usually translated into practitioners doing talks for the public on this or that in order to promote his or her practice, quite simply a marketing device. But what if we take this one level deeper, to where we are really starting to have an impact on the overall health of our planet, our communities, and our patients all at the same time...

There needs to be more of a focus put back on the counsel of diet, lifestyle, and spiritual practice in todays TCM. We have become allopathic in the sense of using herbs (drugs) and acupuncture (surgery), then, if needed, we will look at diet and lifestyle etc. Thought, if our medicine focused on nourishing the essence of our planet, would this not translate into healthier humans? Using fertility as an example,...if you want your patients to be more fertile should they not be eating foods that are grown in fertile soils? Better yet, fertile local soils that would be nourishing to the community!

I believe it is an epidemic of large proportions,...people are so detached from their food and where it comes from, and the food that most people are eating is so denatured, that unless we start treating the root of the condition, we will always be applying band-aids.

Please do everyone of your clients a favor and look into your local slow food movements, promote the support of restaurants that buy from local farmers that take care of the soil and grow organically. Give resources for farmers markets and grocery stores that give back to the community and sell organic & local goods. Also, look more into community buying programs and delivery services where neighbourhoods get together and buy from local farms in bulk. Lets start moving our thoughts towards treating the root of an epidemic, ... it is our responsibility.

Depression:
According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS:
Forget the pills -- eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia:
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure:
This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect way to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power:
200 students at a Twickenham school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.
